Horizon 2020 is the new name for the future EU-funding Programme for Research and Innovation. The name was invented during the competition organized by the EC. It is said that the name is an important symbol of a new departure and a new adventure. "Horizon 2020" will be the new, integrated funding system that will cover all research and innovation funding currently provided through the Framework Programme for Research and Technical Development, the Competitiveness and Innovation Framework Programme (CIP) and the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT). Mr or Ms SME - Small business gets an advocate in each EU Member State
Newly appointed Ms or Mr SME will advocate for the interests of Small and Medium sized Enterprises (SMEs). Chiefly they will check the correct application of the EU law on SMEs and ensure that policies at national, regional and local level are enterprise friendly. European Commission Vice President Antonio Tajani inaugurated a new network of Member States' SME Envoys at the SBA conference “Mobilizing SMEs for the Future of Europe” in Budapest. As SMEs are affected by policies originating in different government departments ranging from tax to financial and from regulatory to education, the SME envoys should help small businesses to concentrate on their core business to strive and create jobs.

Überblick über den letzten Call 2010 der KMU-Maßnahmen
The call of the last workprogramme research for the Benefit of SME with the deadline of 8.12.2010 consisted of three parts::
• Research for SME (FP7-SME-2011-BSG), budget 110 Mio. EUR
• Research for SME associations (FP7-SME-2011-BSG), budget 79 Mio. EUR
• Demonstration activities projects (FP7-SME-2011-CP), Budget 15 Mio. EUR
The two first parts were implemented as all other calls before in the FP7.
The new programme part „demonstration activities“ were new. The introduction of this programme part is based on several reasons. Not all projects contain demonstration activities in the sense of prototype solutions due to funding conditions. On the other hand this action could be interpreted as a kind of trial balloon for innovation activities foreseen in the drafts of the follow-up framework programme. Thus the needs of SME should be better taken into consideration and the projects should be more oriented towards practice and business.
946 proposals were submitted in the three calls. The results were:
| Research for SME | Research for SME associations | Demonstration activities | |
| Proposals | 758 | 157 | 30 |
| Above threshold | 477 | 63 | 11 |
| Mainlist | 125 | 40 | 11 |
| Ineligible | 16 | 13 | 9 |
In the work programme these three are foreseen again. The deadline will be on December 6 2011.
The budget will increase from 204 Mio. EUR to 220 Mio. EUR:
• Research for SME, budget 150 Mio. EUR
• Research for SME associations, budget 49.7 Mio. EUR
• Demonstration activities, budget 20 Mio. EUR
