PROPOSAL AT A GLANCE

Proposal name:
NewBio - New improved orthopaedic biomaterial production procedure
Subject:
The aim of the project is to develop a new production procedure of orthopaedic biomaterials that will provide improved properties like wear resistance, biocompatibility and increase of implant's lifetime. Although current market of orthopaedic implants is extremely profitable (13 billion€ in 2004), the biomaterials used are not efficient enough to cover the needs of the patients.  Specifically the implants’ major disadvantages are infections, low wear resistance, little lifetime etc.  The reasons of these defects are first the raw materials used and secondly the production method followed.

NewBio in order to accomodate these needs it will be involved in the research and development of new raw materials and production methods. The results of this proposal will benefit the SMEs  that are orthopaedic biomaterials manufacturers, , industrial machines manufacturers and producers of implants' raw materials.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Proposal Outline:
- Research and development of new raw materials

- Research and development of industrial production procedure

- Production of improved biomaterial

- Biocompatibility, wear resistance, tribological tests etc.

Keywords:
orthopaedic biomaterial, cold isostatic pressing, design of industrial biomaterials production machine, sintering

PARTNER PROFILE SOUGHT

Already existing consortium:
Already existing consortium: 3 RTDs and two SMEs with high expertise in the project's requirements
Partners sought and role in the project:
SME:
We are looking for industrial equipment manufacturers (cip, sintering machines) and orthopaedic implant manufacturers.
RTD Performers:
Although the consortium has already 3 RTDs an addition of a RTD with high expertise in orthopaedic biomaterials production will be also welcome.
The Proposer is looking for a Coordinator:
No
