PROPOSAL AT A GLANCE

Proposal name:
Robust non-invasive in-vehicle human physiological signal sensing
Subject:
development of a multi-modal robust and cost-effective non-invasive in-vehicle system for the acquisition of human physiological signals

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Proposal Outline:

We are currently preparing a project proposal aimed at the development of a multi-modal robust and cost-effective non-invasive in-vehicle system for the acquisition of human physiological signals.Psycho-physiological signals to be measured will be ECG and respiration patterns. Three vehicle components in contact with the driver have been selected to locate sensing technologies: the steering wheel, seat and seatbelt. Project objectives are thus the following:

(1) To develop new smart textiles able to register changes in pressure patterns caused by breathing and heart rate;

(2) To develop signal filtering and amplification able to reliably rebuild neat respiration and ECG signals from pressure distributions and other physiological data;

(3) To integrate smart textiles into drivers’ seat;

(4) To integrate smart textiles into drivers’ seatbelt;

(5) To integrate with other non-invasive commercial physiological sensors (pulse rate, ECG, respiration, etc.) in: steering wheel, seat and/or seatbelt

Keywords:
Physiological sensing
Non-invasive sensors
bio-signal reconstruction
Automotive components
Steering wheel
Seatbelt
Seat cover

PARTNER PROFILE SOUGHT

Already existing consortium:

RTD1: Instituto de Biomecánica de Valencia (Spain);

RTD2: Research Institute from UK especialized on sensing technologies (UK);

OTH: Large Spanish Automotive TIER 1 Supplier (ROUTE-TO-MARKET)

Partners sought and role in the project:
SME:

We are therefore looking for SMEs who are interested in becoming partners of the supply chain of the new product. Each of the SME participants will obtain IPR ownership and/or exclusive supply rights of the component developed related to their business activity with no overlaps. We are also looking for a Spanish project coordinator, preferably matching the roles of SME1 or SME2 (or both). Market penetration in the automotive industry will be assured since a lead Spanish TIER 1 supplier will participate as route-to-market in the project. Market penetration in other sectors is also previewed (e.g. other vehicles, clothing, footwear, domotic, etc.).

Profiles:

[SME1]: Smart textiles manufacturer;

[SME2]: Supplier of the embedded electronics or microelectronics (preferably already supplying to automotive industry):

[SME3]: Seat cover manufacturer;

[SME4]: Seatbelt (or key component) manufacturer;

[SME5]: Steering wheel (or key component) manufacturer;

[SME6]: Other complementary non-invasive physiological sensor supplier (operating in any sector)
