This proposal is aimed at the development of a new business model based on the rapid manufacturing of a personalized consumer good for a Spanish company.
One of the parts of the project will set up the process for personalizing the key component of the product by means of Selective Laser Sintering technology. However, although the SLS Polyamide materials we currently use are performing well, obtaining enhanced mechanical properties (i.e. higher elasticity and durability) of the component will significantly increase the value and market acceptance of the product. Therefore we are looking to set up a consortium with SMES from Europe (with exception of Spain) specialized in the manufacturing of SLS Rapid Manufacturing (polyamides) materials and the post processing/ finishing of product components made out of these materials enhancing mechanical properties, especially elasticity and durability.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Proposal Outline:
One of the parts of the project will set up the process for personalizing the key component of the product by means of Selective Laser Sintering technology. However, although the SLS Polyamide materials we currently use are performing well, obtaining enhanced mechanical properties (i.e. higher elasticity and durability) of the component will significantly increase the value and market acceptance of the product.
We will consider one the following alternatives to develop:
- Tailor a SLS material (polyamide) to the required mechanical properties of the consumer good
- Develop a post-process finish that improves the mechanical properties of the consumer good, especially the elasticity and durability of it by means of coating, painting, spraying etc.
- A combination of both solutions
We are therefore looking for SMEs who are interested in becoming partners of the supply chain of the new business model obtaining the ownership of results related to their activity (raw materials supply and/or finishing post-processes) and able to:
- Set the specifications to the RTO making the development/formulation of the new polymeric material and/or finish post-process suitable for SLS sintering of the new consumer product
- Produce a sample of prototypes during the project to allow product testing and validation
- Supply of the new material and/or finish post-process developed to the Spanish manufacturer once the project will be concluded
- Find further consumer product applications to the new developments obtained (material and/or process)

Partners sought and role in the project:

We are looking for three different SME profiles, or a combination of one of these profiles.
The first profile (SME1) we are looking for is an SME specialized in the manufacturing and supply of raw SLS materials (polyamides), located in Europe but not in Spain.
The role of the partner within the project will be:
- Expertise support in order to define the material specifications based on mechanical requirements, procedures and specifications of the RM machine, for the RTO to be able to develop/ formulate the new SLS material.
- Manufacturing of material samples for prototype testing and validation of RM components.
- Exclusive supplier of the material to the Spanish manufacturer once the project is concluded
- Research for consumer products where the new material can be applied.
Resulting in the following benefits for the partner SME
- New product: polymeric material for SLS with unique elasticity and durability
- Ownership of the IPR of the new product
- Becoming exclusive supplier of the consumer product manufacturer (great sales expected)
- Establishing new business links with other partners of the supply chain (lead SLS equipment manufacturer and post-process supplier)
The second profile (SME2) we are looking for is an SME specialized in the manufacturing of equipment, materials and/ or procedures for the post processes and/or finishes of Rapid Manufactured (polyamide) components enhancing its mechanical properties, especially the elasticity and durability by means of coating, layering, painting of powders, fluids, fibers etc., located in Europe but not in Spain.
The role of the partner within the project will be:
- Expertise support in defining specifications for a post process or finish equipment, procedure or material to be developed by the RTO partner in order to enhance mechanical properties of the RM component.
- Manufacturing of samples or prototypes to test and validate RM components.
- Exclusive supplier of the post process/ finish to the Spanish manufacturer once the project is concluded
- Research for consumer products where the post process/ finish can be applied.
Resulting in the following benefits for the partner SME
- New post process/ finish for SLS components increasing elasticity and durability
- Increase of competitiveness
- Owner of the Intellectual Property Rights of the developed post process/ finish eqiupment, material or procedure
- Exclusive post process/ finish supplier for this specific consumer good
Finally the third profile (SME3) we are looking for is an SME specialized in post processing/ finishing Rapid Manufactured (polyamide) components enhancing its mechanical properties, especially the elasticity and durability by means of coating, layering, painting of powders, fluids, fibers etc., located in Europe but not in Spain.
The role of the partner within the project will be:
- Expertise support in defining specifications for post processes or finishes to be developed by the RTO partner in order to enhance mechanical properties of the RM component.
- Post processing/ finishing of RM components for testing and validation
- Exclusive post processer/ finisher of the Spanish manufacturer once the project is concluded
- Research for consumer products where the post process/ finish can be applied.
